Alec Thibodeau lives on plants and gleefully toils in Providence, Rhode Island. The skylight in his Lovecraftian artist's garret overlooks a record store, a flower shop and a funeral parlor. Good times. Unless noted otherwise, all images appearing on the Ink Ape site are originally drawn by Alec and, in the case of prints and posters, hand screen printed by him, too.
Alec began his work in screen printing by making posters for String Builder, a band he formed with his brother, Joel (now of Death Vessel). In 2003, using the anagrammatic pseudonym Obadiah Eelcut, Alec drew, printed and issued an experimental currency called Noney, which then circulated globally. Throughout the 2000s he generated more posters and prints, started drawing illustrations for friends and began the Black Acoustic music performance series. He's completed print edition commissions for If'n Books + Marks, AS220 and Brown University's John Nicholas Brown Center.
Alec's first solo show, Easy by Force, opened September 2008 at Stairwell Gallery in Providence. His work has appeared at galleries and museums throughout the U.S.A, including Secret Project Robot in Brooklyn, New York; the University of Alabama at Birmingham's Visual Arts Gallery; Cade Tompkins Projects in Providence; and the Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design. For his work in printmaking he's been awarded project grants by the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts and the LEF Foundation.
